About AI Act Checker

AI Act Checker is a free, single-purpose tool that classifies an AI system under the four risk tiers of the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689). You answer a short branching questionnaire about your system; a deterministic rule engine maps your answers to one of the Act's tiers — Unacceptable, High-risk, Limited-risk, or Minimal-risk — and produces a compliance checklist citing the exact articles.

Why we built this

The EU AI Act is a long, technical regulation, and most teams building AI don't have an in-house regulatory counsel to tell them which tier they fall into. Yet getting the tier wrong is expensive: the wrong tier means either over-building compliance for a system that didn't need it, or skipping obligations and facing fines of up to 7% of global turnover. We wanted a fast, honest first read that anyone can run before they call a lawyer.

How it stays accurate

The classification logic follows the Act's own structure: first the Article 5 prohibited practices, then the two routes into high-risk status (Annex I safety components of regulated products and the Annex III standalone uses), then the Article 50 transparency regime, and finally the general-purpose AI systemic-risk threshold of 10²⁵ FLOPs in Annex XIII. Every checklist item is tied to a specific article so you can verify the source.

What this tool is not

This is an informational classifier, not legal advice. It cannot capture every exemption (scientific research, military use, purely personal use) or every borderline case, and the final binding classification may depend on facts the tool does not ask about. For a binding assessment, consult a qualified lawyer or a notified body.
